What could happen to me and my loved ones?

For one reason or another, many people die without a will. Read these stories and see what happened when Sherman Gordon, Kenneth Caldwell, David Egelhoff and Patricia Nicely, all died without a properly formed will.

Sherman Gordon

An unmarried father, Sherman Gordon died without a will and his daughter received nothing, because state laws excluded her from any beneficiary rights (NY Times article).

Kenneth Caldwell

Kenneth Caldwell was killed in the September 11 terrorist attacks. He was single and had no children. Though his mother raised him alone, his father attempted to acquire some of the $2.9 million death benefit that was to go to his estate. Since he had no will, the matter had to be handled in court and legal fees diminished the benefit (NY Daily News article).

David Egelhoff

David A. Egelhoff was a Boeing employee who named his wife beneficiary on his company pension and life insurance policies. The two divorced and two months later, David died in a car accident. He did not have a will and federal law provided that all benefits went to his ex-wife. This cost his two children from a previous marriage from seeing any compensation following their father's untimely demise (Washington Post article).
